Offset is the distance a fault moves a vein. A compact cluster of nugget relief sits on top of a smooth band that widens to meet it.

A fault does not only break the rock; it moves the vein. A miner following a vein sees it stop dead and has to look on the other side of the break, some distance away, where it picks up again. That distance has a name: the offset. Offset sets a compact cluster of nugget relief on a smooth band that widens to meet it, like the piece of vein found again a little farther on.
