No. 502 · The Assay Office
Nugget on top, cut flat on the sides. A bullion nugget ring in solid 14K gold or sterling silver.
The Assay Office
Bullion is gold in bars. This one keeps a bar’s flat polished sides and puts the nugget relief on top, where an assayer stamped the weight and fineness.
In 1850s San Francisco, placer gold went to the assayer, who melted it and cast it into bars. Each bar was stamped with the assayer’s name, a number, the weight, the fineness in thousandths and the value: bars from the firm of Kellogg & Humbert, raised from the wreck of the SS Central America, still carry those figures. Almost all the big nuggets of the time ended up melted; the Welcome Nugget from Ballarat went into sovereigns in November 1859. Bullion keeps the shape of the bar, straight smooth sides, and leaves the nugget relief on top.

The Assay Office nugget collection: rings in solid 14K gold or sterling silver shaped like the bars, ingots, octagons and stepped frames of the assay trade, the nugget relief set inside them; most are nugget signet rings. At the assay office, loose gold was melted, tested for fineness and cast into stamped bars.
