Nugget ring buying guide
Check five things before you pay for a nugget ring: its weight in your size, whether the head is solid, the metal and its marks, how a wide face fits, and what the price pays for. Each one is below in short, with a link to the page that covers it in full.
I design our nugget rings. Our workshop, which makes engagement rings, casts each one to order. Before we sold a single ring, we read the reviews of the best-selling nugget rings online. Most complaints came down to the same five things: the ring was lighter than expected, it bent or broke, it was hollow underneath, it didn’t fit, or the price made no sense once the weight was known.

Ask for the weight at your size
Weight tells you how much metal you are paying for, how stiff the ring will be, and whether the head may be hollow. Many large retailers don’t publish it; a seller who does is giving you the one number you can check when the ring arrives.
A weight only means something next to the size of the face. Our No. 014 The Block has a face 15.3 mm wide and weighs 21.4 to 22.2 g in 14K gold at US 10. Across our catalog, 14K rings run from 3.9 to 33.8 g at that size. Every ring page gives its 14K weight range at your size, from the 3D file we cast from; your certificate records the actual weight.
Look under the head
A nugget head is a lot of metal, so some rings are cast as a shell: either a closed hollow center, or an open back you can see by looking into the ring. The FTC’s Jewelry Guides say an item with a hollow center should not be described as solid. Ask for a photo of the inside, and compare the weight with the width of the face.
Our 14K gold and sterling silver rings are cast solid, with no hollow center or scooped-out back under the head. How to check any ring: solid vs hollow nugget ring.
Pick the metal first
The metal sets the price more than anything else. 14K yellow gold is 14 parts gold in 24. Vermeil is sterling silver covered with gold; ours is solid 925 sterling silver with a layer of 18K gold, which can wear with use. Sterling silver darkens with time and needs polishing. Gold-plated brass and steel rings cost little, and the complaints about them are green fingers and a color that wears off.

Read the marks
A karat stamp is a claim by whoever struck it. Federal law requires the maker’s name or registered trademark next to the quality mark, and the FTC’s advice is not to buy a piece that has a karat mark without one. At home, a magnet can rule a ring out and a water density test can catch some plated rings; vinegar and toothpaste prove nothing.
The tests, and what each one can prove: how to tell if a nugget ring is real.
Get the size right
Fit is the second most common complaint in nugget ring reviews. A wide face covers more of the finger, so it feels tighter than a thin band of the same size. We measure how wide each design touches the finger; 39 of our 58 designs carry a note on their page suggesting half a size up.
We make every design in US sizes 4 to 15, half sizes included. When to size up, and what resizing a textured ring involves: nugget ring size.
Everyday or occasion
Some nugget rings disappear on the hand; others catch on pockets and turn on the finger. We label each design from measurements of its 3D file. Everyday: the head sits 3.5 mm or less off the finger, the ring weighs 15 g or less in 14K at US 10, the sides of the head carry no sharp texture, and its weight sits close to the finger’s axis. Occasion: anything else. 16 of our designs are everyday rings.
Neither is better: an occasion ring is what many people want from a nugget. The Block is one; its head sits 4.3 mm off the finger. You can filter the gold nugget rings by wear.
Know what the price pays for
A gold ring’s price starts with the value of its gold, which moves every day, and adds the work of making it. Comparing two rings only makes sense at a known weight. Our 14K prices follow the gold price, with weekday updates; vermeil and sterling silver have one fixed price per design. You can lock a 14K price for 48 hours, and your price is fixed when you pay. Returns, resizing and timing
Made-to-order rings are often final sale, so read the policy before you pay. Ours: A catalog ring without engraving can be returned for a refund within 30 days of delivery. Engraved rings and rings modified at your request cannot be returned. You pay the return shipping, and a ring that does not come back in its original condition is refunded minus its loss in value. We make the size you order, so a size chosen in error is not a defect we can cover. After your order, we can resize the ring for a fee, quoted on request.
Each ring is cast in your size after you order: about 2 to 3 weeks at the workshop, then carrier transit.
Questions to ask before you pay
- What does it weigh in my size, in grams, and is that measured or estimated?
- Is the head solid, or hollow or open underneath? Can I see a photo of the inside?
- What is stamped inside, and is there a maker’s mark next to the karat?
- For vermeil or plated rings: how thick is the gold layer?
- How wide is the face, and how wide is the band at the bottom?
- Should I size up for this width?
- Can it be resized later, and what does that cost?
- Can I return it, and who pays the return shipping?
A seller who answers all 8 in writing has nothing to hide.
If you stop loving it
A gold buyer pays for gold content and weight, not for the design or the making, and often less than the full value of the gold. What that means for a nugget ring, and what to ask us before a trade-in: are gold nugget rings worth anything.
