The story of Drift

The Lode

A drift is a horizontal tunnel that follows a vein. The band tapers from a broad top to a narrow base; rounded nugget relief covers the upper half and gives way to polished gold below.

On June 9, 1858, at Ballarat, a night shift of 22 Cornish miners brought up, from 180 feet down under Bakery Hill, a nugget of more than 2,000 ounces: the Welcome Nugget. The story goes that Richard Jeffery, credited with the find, fainted as he freed it; nobody can check that now. Drift has the shape of a tunnel: broad and textured on top, it narrows to a smooth base.
