The story of Cigar Band

The River

In a placer, the gold gathers in one richer band of gravel that miners called the pay streak.

Gold is not spread evenly through a placer. It gathers in a richer band, often on the bedrock or just above it. In the Klondike that band lay under frozen ground: miners lit a fire at night, scraped off a few inches of thawed gravel in the morning, and started again until they reached bedrock. Cigar Band is the wide band: 14 mm of nugget relief, unbroken, all the way round the finger.
