The story of The Block

The Claim

Named for the block claim, an Australian miners’ term for a square claim marked out by a post at each corner. A rectangular face with a firm edge holds the nugget relief.

In California in November 1854, the Morgan mine at Carson Hill brought up a single mass of gold weighing 195 troy pounds, the largest on record from the state. The Block starts from the staked square: a rectangular face with clean edges, irregular nugget relief inside it and broad shoulders around it, like a square plot with the gold still in the ground. Our heavier signets, Bullion and Anvil among them, came out of this shape.

Description
  • A rectangular face gives the irregular nugget relief a definite edge. Broad shoulders carry the shape into the band.
  • Part of The Claim: a face of nugget plates on plain shoulders. See the collection
