The story of Anvil

The Assay Office

In 1869 the Welcome Stranger nugget was too big for the bank’s scales at Dunolly, Victoria; the blacksmith cut it on his anvil. Anvil is a thick head with flat polished sides and nugget relief on its face.

On February 5, 1869, near Moliagul in Victoria, John Deason struck a huge nugget at the foot of a tree, about an inch below the surface: the Welcome Stranger. At Dunolly, no scale at the bank could take it, so the blacksmith Archibald Walls split it on his anvil. That anvil still exists; it stands on a quartzite cairn in front of the Dunolly museum. Anvil has the weight of the thing: a thick head with flat polished sides and, on its face, the relief of the nugget.

Description
  • A thick rectangular head carries nugget relief inside a polished rim. Its sides are flat and polished, and broad shoulders lead into a plain band.
  • Part of The Assay Office: set inside a bar, an ingot or a stepped frame. See the collection

About the collection, the workshop and the gold

No. 531 Octagon nugget ring in 14K yellow gold, on a ledge of dark slate

The Assay Office

The Assay Office nugget collection: rings in solid 14K gold or sterling silver shaped like the bars, ingots, octagons and stepped frames of the assay trade, the nugget relief set inside them; most are nugget signet rings. At the assay office, loose gold was melted, tested for fineness and cast into stamped bars.
