The story of Grain

The River

A grain is the smallest unit of gold weight, 480 to the troy ounce. One small, low nugget lies along a slim polished band.

On the Victoria goldfields, buyers and many miners carried folding scales. A set from the 1850s kept at Museums Victoria goes down to a weight of a single grain, 0.0648 grams. In the Klondike, until Dawson had a bank, gold dust was the everyday money, carried in a leather pouch called a poke. Grain is one of our lightest rings: one small, low nugget lying along a slim polished band.
