Nugget ring size: why wide faces fit tight
After breakage, fit is the most common complaint in nugget ring reviews. On one best-selling listing, 166 of 959 reviews are about size; on another, 32 of 210. The usual story: a ring ordered in a 13 that wears like a 12.
Do nugget rings run small?
No, but they feel small. The inside diameter of a size 10 is the same on any ring. A wide nugget face covers more of your finger and has to pass over more of the knuckle, so it feels tighter than a thin band of the same size. Many wide rings need half a size up; a narrow nugget band usually doesn’t.
Jewelers agree on the effect and disagree on the threshold. Mazzucchelli’s suggests half a size up from 5 mm wide; Bluestone suggests half a size for bands of 4 to 6 mm and more beyond; Blue Nile’s sizer only says a wider band may need half a size up.
Why band-width rules miss on a nugget ring
Those rules assume a band of even width all the way around. A nugget ring isn’t one. Our No. 014 The Block is 15.3 mm wide on top and 6.95 mm at the bottom of the band, measured on its 3D file. Under a 5 mm rule it needs half a size up; under a “measure the band” rule it might need nothing, because the part under your palm is about 7 mm.
What matters is how wide the inside of the ring touches the finger, and how far around. That is what we measure.
How we decide when to suggest half a size up
For every design we measure, on its 3D file, how wide the ring’s contact with the finger is at each point around the circle. When the contact is 8 mm wide or more over at least 90 degrees (a quarter of the way around), the ring page says so and suggests half a size above your usual size. The Block touches the finger 14.3 mm wide under its head, so it carries the note; 39 of our 58 designs do.
The 8 mm line is our own rule, not an industry standard, set wider than retail band rules because a nugget ring is wide only under its head. We will check it against real fittings once the first rings are worn.
The size you order is the inside size we make: we don’t add half a size for you. We follow the US ring size standard strictly. Each ring is cast to the exact inside diameter our size chart gives for the size you choose: 11.63 mm + 0.8128 mm × the US size. We make every design in US sizes 4 to 15, half sizes included.
Comfort fit, an inside slightly domed instead of flat with rounded edges, keeps a wide band from digging in. Most of our cast designs have one; a few are flatter inside, and each ring page says when a design has it.
How to measure for a wide ring
- Use a ring sizer or a ring you own that fits the same finger, not a strip of paper: paper has no width.
- If you can, size with a wide band; a jeweler can size you with one.
- Measure at the end of the day, when fingers are warm and at their largest.
- Measure two or three times; if the results differ, take the larger one.
- Check the knuckle: the ring has to pass over it.
Our printable sizer and the on-screen ring measure: find your ring size at home. A pinky or an index finger is measured the same way, on that finger.
Can nugget rings be resized?
Sometimes, within limits. A jeweler cuts the band, adds or removes metal and solders it closed. On a plain lower band the seam disappears under polishing; where the texture runs all the way around, the seam cuts through it and has to be re-textured by hand. A wide head doesn’t change, so a large resize can throw the ring out of proportion.
Blue Nile notes that some ring styles can’t be resized at all, depending on the metal and the design. For ours: We make the size you order, so a size chosen in error is not a defect we can cover. After your order, we can resize the ring for a fee, quoted on request.
