The story of Signet S

The Claim

In the first California camps, tools left on a piece of ground were proof that someone was working it.

There was no federal mining law in the first California camps. Under the miners’ own codes, tools left on a piece of ground were at first proof that someone was working it. The custom faded as the camps filled up, and the codes set the size of a claim and how it was marked. Signet S is the small square face, with the nugget texture running partway down the shoulders before a plain polished band: a stake driven in, with the earth still around it.
