The Lode

An outcrop is where a rock formation shows at the surface. One irregular patch of nugget relief breaks through a smooth, high-domed band.

A prospector looks for the place where a vein breaks the surface, and often knows it by its color: above the veins, weathered rock turns rust and ochre, the gossan, and the quartz shows iron-stained edges. Outcrop is a polished dome where the relief shows in one place only: a single irregular patch of nugget relief on top of a smooth, high-domed band, like a vein coming out of the ground.
