The story of Signet L

The Claim

A signet once sealed letters in wax. Signet L has a large square face covered in nugget plates separated by narrow channels, on plain polished shoulders.

A signet was for signing: pressed into wax, it sealed a document. For a gold seeker, the document that counted was the claim, ground staked at the corners with a notice posted in the name of whoever took it. In the Klondike, the Discovery Claim on Bonanza Creek measured 500 by 2,000 feet and was staked in August 1896. Signet L is the large square face: the whole plot, covered in nugget plates and divided by narrow channels like parcels of ground.
