The story of Seam

The Lode

A seam is a thin layer or vein running through rock. One vein of nugget relief runs round a wide, flat-topped polished band on a slight diagonal.

In 1851, sailors left their ships for the rushes at Ballarat and Bendigo. To them, a rock standing out of the water was a reef; they gave the name to the quartz veins standing out of the ground, and the word stayed in Australia. Twenty years later, at Hill End in New South Wales, a blast in 1872 opened up a block of quartz and slate shot through with veins of gold: the Holtermann specimen. Seam is a polished band crossed by one vein of nugget relief, set on a slight angle.
