The Assay Office

The Blanche Barkly nugget was about 28 inches long and only 1 to 2 inches thick.

On August 27, 1857, at Kingower in Victoria, four miners dug out a nugget 13 feet down. It was about 28 inches long but only 1 to 2 inches thick: more a plate of gold than a lump. Named the Blanche Barkly, after the governor’s daughter, it was shown at the Crystal Palace and then, according to an account one of its finders published in 1902, melted into sovereigns. Tablet is a flat plate of gold: a cushion-shaped face in a polished frame, filled with nugget relief, on smooth shoulders.
