The story of Facet

The Assay Office

A facet is a flat polished face cut on a stone. Here a flat polished oval sits on top of a domed head, with nugget relief all around its sides.

Not every mass of gold is a rounded nugget. In August 1864, on the Middle Fork of the American River in California, William Russell Davis found a mass of crystallized gold of about 201 troy ounces. Jules Fricot bought it in 1865: the Fricot Nugget. It was shown in Paris in 1878, disappeared, turned up again in a bank vault in 1943, and is now at the California State Mining and Mineral Museum in Mariposa. Facet keeps that contrast: a flat polished oval on top of a domed head, with raw nugget relief all around its sides.

Description
  • A domed head with a flat polished oval on top and nugget relief all around its sides. Plain polished shoulders taper into the band.

About the collection, the workshop and the gold

No. 531 Octagon nugget ring in 14K yellow gold, on a ledge of dark slate

The Assay Office

The Assay Office nugget collection: rings in solid 14K gold or sterling silver shaped like the bars, ingots, octagons and stepped frames of the assay trade, the nugget relief set inside them; most are nugget signet rings. At the assay office, loose gold was melted, tested for fineness and cast into stamped bars.

Our story

14K or silver

Solid 14K gold keeps the warm yellow of our pictures. Sterling silver is the same ring again. Each has one fixed price per design.
