The story of Ingot

The Assay Office

An ingot is metal as it comes from the mold. A long rectangular tablet sits across the finger, its nugget relief set in a stepped polished frame.

An ingot is made to be handled, stored or melted again, never to stay as it is. Some of the best-known ingots of the California rush are those of Kellogg & Humbert, assayers in San Francisco, raised from the wreck of the SS Central America; the largest of them, the Eureka bar, is stamped 933.94 troy ounces, about 64 pounds. Ingot sets a long bar across the finger, framed like an ingot in its mold, with the nugget relief where the raw metal would be.

About the collection, the workshop and the gold

No. 531 Octagon nugget ring in 14K yellow gold, on a ledge of dark slate

The Assay Office

The Assay Office nugget collection: rings in solid 14K gold or sterling silver shaped like the bars, ingots, octagons and stepped frames of the assay trade, the nugget relief set inside them; most are nugget signet rings. At the assay office, loose gold was melted, tested for fineness and cast into stamped bars.
