The story of Deco

The Assay Office

Gold was fixed at $35 an ounce in January 1934, and the price held until August 1971.

In January 1934, in the Art Deco years, the United States fixed the price of gold at $35 an ounce. That official price held for thirty-seven years, until August 1971. Deco takes up the architecture of those years, frames that step down level by level: two polished steps lead down to a central square of nugget relief, with flat polished walls on the sides of the head, so the nugget sits at the bottom of the last step.

Description
  • Two polished steps frame a square face and lead down to a central square of nugget relief. The sides of the head are flat polished walls above a plain band.
  • Part of The Assay Office: set inside a bar, an ingot or a stepped frame. See the collection

About the collection, the workshop and the gold

No. 531 Octagon nugget ring in 14K yellow gold, on a ledge of dark slate

The Assay Office

The Assay Office nugget collection: rings in solid 14K gold or sterling silver shaped like the bars, ingots, octagons and stepped frames of the assay trade, the nugget relief set inside them; most are nugget signet rings. At the assay office, loose gold was melted, tested for fineness and cast into stamped bars.

Our story

14K or silver

Solid 14K gold keeps the warm yellow of our pictures. Sterling silver is the same ring again. Each has one fixed price per design.
