The story of Inverse

The Assay Office

From the 1850s, San Francisco jewelers set polished gold-veined quartz in gold.

In San Francisco, from the 1850s, jewelers cut and polished slabs of white quartz veined with native gold and set them in gold: brooches, watch chains, jewel boxes. The polished stone was in the middle and the metal around it. Inverse does the opposite of our signets: a raised, flat square of polished gold in the center of the face, inside a border of nugget relief, rough gold framing the smooth.

Description
  • A raised flat polished square sits in the centre of the face, inside a border of nugget relief. Plain polished shoulders lead into the band.
  • Part of The Assay Office: set inside a bar, an ingot or a stepped frame. See the collection

About the collection, the workshop and the gold

No. 531 Octagon nugget ring in 14K yellow gold, on a ledge of dark slate

The Assay Office

The Assay Office nugget collection: rings in solid 14K gold or sterling silver shaped like the bars, ingots, octagons and stepped frames of the assay trade, the nugget relief set inside them; most are nugget signet rings. At the assay office, loose gold was melted, tested for fineness and cast into stamped bars.

The workshop

Our workshop makes engagement rings. It casts each nugget ring in your size after you order, from the 3D file I draw, and the certificate gives the metal and the estimated weight.

Our story

14K or silver

Solid 14K gold keeps the warm yellow of our pictures. Sterling silver is the same ring again. Each has one fixed price per design.
