The story of Pinky

The Claim

In the Klondike, a sourdough was an old hand: someone who had wintered in the North.

Klondike bread was made with sourdough, the dough sometimes mixed right in the flour sack. The word came to mean the old hand, a miner who had been in the North long enough to live on it. Pinky is the small, solid signet you keep on your little finger for years: a cushion-shaped face with rounded corners, covered in nugget plates, on a sturdy plain band.
