The story of Statement XL

The Claim

Under the Mining Law of 1872, whoever holds the top of a vein holds the vein, all the way down.

The Mining Law of 1872 gives the holder of a claim every vein whose apex, its top, lies inside the claim, “throughout their entire depth,” even where the vein dips under the neighbor’s ground. That 1872 text is still the law today. Statement XL is a tall square head with nugget plates on top and on all four sides, on thick shoulders: the top of the vein, and the mass it promises below.
