The story of Meridian

The Claim

Land surveys across two-thirds of California still start from a point fixed on Mount Diablo in 1851.

In the summer of 1851, in the middle of the rush, the surveyor Leander Ransom set the starting point of a meridian on the summit of Mount Diablo. The public land surveys of two-thirds of California and all of Nevada are still measured from it, and land, claims included, is described on that grid. Meridian is a cushion-square face split by a straight line: nugget relief on one side, flat polished gold on the other, the line that divides the ground.

Description
  • A cushion-square face is split in two by a straight line: one part nugget relief, the other flat polished gold. Plain shoulders lead into a polished band.
  • Part of The Claim: a face of nugget plates on plain shoulders. See the collection
