The River

The finest gold, flour gold, is light enough to float away with the current.

Gold does not only come as nuggets. The finest, which miners call flour gold, is so light it floats on the water and slips away with the current. At Ballarat, miners also spoke of the indicator, a narrow thread of rock whose meeting with the quartz veins pointed to rich gold. Thread keeps that fineness: a band about 4 mm wide, with fine nugget relief across the top and plain polished gold underneath, for every day.
