The story of Cascade

The River

In a sluice, the water drops from riffle to riffle and the gold stays behind each bar.

A sluice is a long wooden trough set on a slope. Water carries the gravel down it, and bars set across the bottom, the riffles, catch the heavier gold, so the water falls in small cascades from one bar to the next. In the Klondike, sluices went up in spring to wash the gravel dug out over the winter. Cascade sets three small panels of nugget relief in a row between polished bars: a sluice, at the size of a finger.
