The story of Classic Taper

The River

Gold was first seen in California in the tailrace of a sawmill, in January 1848.

A tailrace is the channel that carries water away from a mill wheel. At Coloma in January 1848, the tailrace of Sutter’s sawmill was dug out by day, and water was let through it at night to carry off the loose debris. It was in that channel, on January 24, that James Marshall saw the first flakes. This Classic Taper is about 12 mm wide on top and narrows to about 4 mm underneath: nugget plates on the wide part, polished gold on the narrow part, the mill above and the channel below.
